April Showers Bring More Than May Flowers to Jersey Shore

April Showers Bring May Flowers…

Beautiful Mill Creek leading into Barnegat Bay

You know the rhyme! But let’s talk about what showers also bring… aside from the beautiful flowers following a rainy season, rain also brings runoff. Runoff of roadways and lawns. The chemicals we use to keep our yards looking great in season also cause damage to other areas of the environment. Living at the Jersey Shore on Barnegat Bay, this issue of stormwater runoff has become a major concern of wildlife preservationists. Groups like Barnegat Bay Partnership have created programs to combat these issues.

How can you do your part to combat that? Let’s explore some natural organic options to alleviate the chemical invasion of our environments.

Healthy Soil

First, there is always the first line of defense which is to have healthy soil. Healthy soil = healthy plants. A healthy plant will naturally defend itself against predators such as bugs and disease. In Ocean County, NJ, our local soil testing area is actually an extension of Rutgers called the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Cooperative Extension of Ocean County. Here, you can have your garden soils tested, for a small fee. Then you can treat your soil based on its acidity or lack thereof.

Another option is to use organic methods for treating diseased plants. The Global Healing Center offers 10 Homemade Organic Pesticides that are much healthier alternatives for our environment and our immediate yard spaces which can affect not only the environment but children and pets. Amazon has many “organic” products available for use now such as Neem Oil, Organic Liquid Kelp, EcoSmart products for things like spider control.

With the increase of organic products on the market and natural oil concoctions, I think it is socially responsible to do what we can for our environment for future generations.

I remember as a young child just loving the opportunity to run barefoot in the yard through the grass. The soft grass under my feet… it just brings me back. Check out this study on the Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth’s Surface Electrons, called “Earthing”. Having a healthy lawn and pesticide free is so important to our bodies. Laying and rolling around in the grass on a healthy lawn is a great way to reconnect with the Earth and also ourselves.

So get out there and enjoy Mother Earth!
