Spring Planting: Catch up on the Trend at the Jersey Shore

Let’s be candid…. who doesn’t love a beautifully landscaped yard? Right? With all the goodies like a candy store. Lots of beautiful colors and textures. I mentioned it before, when April hits, it’s like the ‘Awakening’… lots of hustle and bustle of yard clean ups, plantings, mulches and the like. If you are thinking of Spring Planting, then let us Catch Up On The Trends!

Everything reawakens at the Jersey Shore each Spring. Come experience the beauty of the coast.

Just like fashion trends, everyone has a different opinion of what is the trend for this spring planting. So, I decided to stop in at one of my favorite places… Hoch’s Landscaping and Garden Center in Barnegat. They service the Jersey Shore area and have a great array of plantings available. You will often see their trucks buzzing around on LBI getting the shore homes ready for summer entertaining.

When I caught up to Dan Hoch, owner of Hoch’s, to chat about landscaping trends, he mentioned a few things that are circling back around.

Small container gardening offers those with limited space ability to grow a variety of plants.
  • Smaller container gardening is on the rise as well as organic gardening. There is nothing like a fresh salad from your own garden, pesticide free!
  • Organic herb and vegetable gardening is increasingly popular.
  • And of course, in our society of “gotta have it now” we have the quick and easy grow type products like container tomatoes.
  • Dan also mentioned the new “micro nutrients” which are organic for your soil. It is not a chemical, it is organic and helps the soil to become healthy, thereby allowing plants to be healthy. When plants are healthy, they are able to ward off pests.

  • Birding is also coming back to the scene with more and more bird feeders being sold annually than ever before.
  • Hummingbirds are always a fun bird to watch while enjoying the sunset on the deck with a cocktail and family and friends. Local nature preserves like the Edwin B Forsythe provide that space to view all the colorful birds you can.

Dan is also a whiz with bamboo. If you are ever interested in having it in your yard, talk to Dan! He knows just how to install it so it doesn’t spread and is a beautiful addition to your scape.

Low maintenance landscapes are also trending with minimal requirements for those homeowners that don’t live full time at the shore but want great looking curb appeal.

Whatever your taste, adding plantings to your home landscape is always a benefit in terms of resale, curb appeal and just everyday pleasure. Enjoy your world!
